Review for Amp Energy--Active (Lemonade)

-->
NOTE: As with all the other "new" flavors, what you have here is just a repackaged, renamed version of the same ol’ Amp Energy—Lightning.  Great for lovers of that drink, bad for people who were hoping for something new.  Read on.

EASE IN ACQUISITION—10

It’s EVERYWHERE!!!

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—9

In the case of Amp Energy—Active, the new look served as a nice upgrade.  The previous can was about as bland as they came, but with the newer, cleaner look, the shade of yellow selected and the black work together to make the can look pretty sharp.

TASTE—6

Didn’t like how it tasted the first time around, and slammed that in my first review, essentially stating that it tasted like…nothing.  Well, this time I had it cold—which is apparently a big deal for the Crystal Light lemonade flavor.  It was still rather unremarkable, but at least I didn’t feel like I’d been cheated.

KICK (INTENSITY)—6

Here, however, I did feel kind of cheated—the kick’s pretty average, maybe even a bit below average.  Enough to do the job, but not enough to make much of an impression at all.

KICK (DURATION)—7

Average—you can expect 3 hours or so of efficacy before arriving at the finish line.

THE DRINK OVERALL—6.33

Well, notwithstanding the new look, Amp Energy—Active is still pretty lackluster in the performance department.  If, however, you liked Amp Energy—Lightning, you’ll still love it in the new packaging.

Review for NX--Speed Freak

CAFFEINE CONTENT

240 mg

EASE IN ACQUISITION—4

Seen this at a handful of places, but they’re always cheapest at grocery outlet stores.  If I were you, I’d check there.

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—8

This drink, like NOS (with which I’m guessing this drink is trying to compete), is obviously meant to appeal to the racing crowd—one of which I am not, but ni modo—this is a nice-lookin’ bottle.  I liked the lug nut-style cap, I liked the black bottle, I liked the black-and-red image of the dragster up front, and I like the straightforwardness in advertising (especially that part about “crashproof energy”—intriguing).  The aforementioned racing crowd appreciates things that look pretty high-octane, and will probably be quite satisfied with the whole getup.

TASTE—3

I’ve read a few reviews on this drink, and everyone seemed to like it—I guess I’m just going to be the dissident in this review and say that I really disliked it.  I opened up the bottle, took a whiff, and gagged—it smelled positively rotten to me, like a orchard full of rotting mangos.  Didn’t look particularly appetizing, either—kind of a noxious pale yellow, with white shmutz of some sort hanging out at the surface.  Tasting it, I recall disliking it—didn’t taste as permeated with decay as it smelled, but I really couldn’t get around that stench—it hit me every time I lifted up my glass, and made my stomach do back flips every time I took a drink.

KICK (INTENSITY)—9

As bad as it tasted to me, I’m kind of glad I got such a nice kick out of it—I felt infused with energy, and even though I wasn’t terribly jittery as a result, it was obvious enough that I was buzzing that my wife called me out on it.

KICK (DURATION)—9

So…after the four-hour mark rolled around, it was time to see if the NX company was bluffing on their “crashproof” claim—I’m pleased to report that they didn’t.  With as much caffeine and sugar as you get, you’d expect to face plant pretty hard after the effects wore of, but I didn’t have any problems of the sort—I guess the quercetin was good for something after all.

THE DRINK OVERALL—7

So the kick will satisfy most caffeine junkies, but as far as taste was concerned, it was pretty rancid.  I’d stay away, but if you find your views jive best with reviewers like caffeine-a-holic, then you might want to give this a whirl.  Just don’t say I didn’t try to warn you first….

Review for Rip It--Citrus X Sugar Free

CAFFEINE CONTENT

200 mg

EASE IN ACQUISITION—7

Got a dollar store nearby?  Then you’ve also got Citrus X Sugar Free nearby.

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—4

Yellow-ish pseudosunburst, vast exposure of aluminum—if this doesn’t strike you as bland, I don’t know what will.

TASTE—6

I wouldn’t say I enjoyed Citrus X Sugar Free, but I did feel less antagonized when drinking it than when I was trying to choke down its sucrose-laden counterpart.  Still nothing particularly impressive, unless you are wild about sugar free Sunny D.

KICK (INTENSITY)—8

Kick was strong enough to appreciate—to give you some idea, I was trying to get some housework done on less sleep than I would have liked, so I decided (reluctantly, given my experience with Citrus X) to take this one down.  Fifteen minutes later, I was no longer dragging, and my wife was appreciating, though with suspicion, my increase in productivity.

KICK (DURATION)—8

To finish the story, the house got clean.  Didn’t have any trouble with fatigue for about 3½ hours, after which I was happily able to crash in my lazy boy in a nice, clean house.

THE DRINK OVERALL—7.33

So…kick’s passable, but this probably won’t be one I’ll be drinking a second time.  If you’re one of the aforementioned individuals in the sugar free Sunny D niche, then here’s an energy drink for you.

Review for Rockstar Iced

After a brief 13-month run (I’m revisiting this review on May 19, 2013), Rockstar Iced has been discontinued.

I suppose it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise—in my years of reviewing, I’ve never seen such an unenthused response from readers at the posting of a review of a brand spankin’ new product from a major energy drink company (since I first published the review, it’s received only 322 page views, with is about what my review of Rockstar Xdurance received in its first week up).  In any event, I figured with the discontinuation that I had better take the time to lay to rest some mixed feelings I’ve had about it since the first time that early April morning.  More on that when we come to the “Taste” section….

CAFFEINE CONTENT

240 mg

EASE IN ACQUISITION—10

As long as you’re in civilized territory, this was pretty easy to come by.  Problem for me initially was the fact that I live in small-town Idaho, and it takes new products a while to trickle in.  It eventually did, but I owed my relatively early review of it to the fact that I had been in Utah the weekend before, and it was already everywhere there.

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—10

The can kicks butt.  I would refer you to the picture so it could speak for itself, but my shot doesn’t begin to do it justice, so I must attempt to do so.  The can has a satin finish, exactly like that employed by Rockstar Energy Cola.  The background is a sharp bronze, and coupled with the black it is extremely effective.  They could have left it at just that, but no—Rockstar took it one step further, adding white lettering to the logo at the side and in the name of the drink, within which there are evenly spaced reflective elements, which give the drink…how would I say this…bling.  Even if you aren’t looking for it, once it catches you’re eye, you’re ogling it through the refrigerator door until you come to your senses and grab a can.  Now, imagine how this would have looked like on a 24 oz. can….

TASTE—8

And here, we get to the mixed feelings.

First time I had it, I quite liked it.  Tasted about what the can said it would taste like—peach tea—and was really quite a refreshing and enjoyable combination.  My only tiff was the obvious presence of the artificial sweeteners, which were then conspicuous enough take away from the experience.  However, I remembered experiencing the same thing with Monster Rehab—Lemonade, and the second time around I didn’t taste them at all.  Down the road, I decided to have another go, and grabbed a can at a nearby gas station—and wondered if it was even the same beverage.

In a word, it tasted harsh.  The peach flavor had an abrasive quality that I’ve never experienced with the fruit or anything inspired by it, and the artificial sweeteners only served to accentuate that undesirable property.  Subsequent experiences (there were two others after that) yield similar results—it really wasn’t good at all.

Well, the discontinuation came (along with Rockstar 2X, it seems), and I figured I’d better take the time to see if I could unravel the mystery of a delicious energy drink gone bad.  Acquiring two cans at a local gas station, I took down one the same way I had all the others (except the first one, it turns out…but we’ll get to that)—straight from the can—except I went about it more slowly this time around.  First few sips were exactly the same as before—coarse and unpleasant.  Making my way through it, that quality seemed to disappear, and it came to taste like a watered-down version of the first can.

The next day, I opted to have it on ice, which has made all the difference in the world with other drinks in times past.  Lo and behold, the harshness disappeared, and from the first sip I was quite enjoying myself again.  The artificial sweeteners were still there, but few drinks are perfect.

Bottom line—if you’ve had it before and haven’t liked it all that much, try it on ice…while you can, anyway.

KICK (INTENSITY)—10

Onto the kick.  First time, I remember I had scarcely gotten a third of the way through the can when I started to feel the effects, and I had a pretty good idea of what I was going to get—and I was excited.  Sure enough, I finished it up, and pretty soon I was feeling the full force.  Rockstar Iced delivered a seriously awesome kick, which infused me with some serious energy (even after getting only 4 hours of sleep) and gave me all I needed and then some to hit the ground running.

KICK (DURATION)—10

Near as I can tell, I got about 5 hours of energy before I could tell that the effects were wearing off.  I wasn’t paying all that much attention—too busy being INFUSED WITH SOME SERIOUS ENERGY!

THE DRINK OVERALL—9.33

If you can still find Rockstar Iced, all I can say is grab it!  I enjoyed drinking it once I figured out that it needed to be iced (go figure), and I seriously enjoyed the effects.  I have very little to say against this drink—just the artificial sweetener aftertaste, but in light of the deliciousness of the flavor itself and the exceptional kick, this lone fault is pretty dang easy to overlook.  Happy drinking!

Review for Amp Energy--Boost (Grape)

CAFFEINE CONTENT

160 mg

EASE IN ACQUISITION—10

Exceptionally common.

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—9

New motif, old motif…it doesn’t matter.  The purple rocks.  On the new can, the refined look and the purple shades combine to make for an exceptionally sharp-looking beverage—the kind of sort you expect to be held by an exceptionally well-dressed man in a formal purple shirt, black pants, and shined, square-toed shoes.

TASTE—8

It’s hard to make a decent grape beverage, and this particular Amp Energy—Boost formulation does the best job of any I had…well, let me think…no, it’s the most successful effort, at least when it comes to energy drinks.

KICK (INTENSITY)—7

Not exceptionally powerful, but it got the job done.  It was afternoon, I was dragging, I took this down, and I was no longer dragging.

KICK (DURATION)—8

This one held off my after-lunch crash by about 3½ hours—long enough to get me through the busiest parts of the day without crashing (not in the caffeine sense this time) and burning.

THE DRINK OVERALL—7.67

Like grape + energy?  Chances are you’ll like this drink.  Don’t think I need to say any more than that.

Review for Amp Energy--Focus

NOTE: Liked Amp Energy—Elevate?  You’ll like Amp Energy—Focus…mostly because they’re the same beverage.  That’s right, it’s still around—just repackaged and renamed.  Read on.

CAFFEINE CONTENT

160 mg

EASE IN ACQUISITION—10

Common as dirt.

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—8

This particular beverage has been one to benefit from the change in packaging—the old look in blue wasn’t very impressive, and with the black accents almost took on a dirty appearance.  The new look is much cleaner, and far nicer to look upon.

TASTE—7

Liked this a little more the second time around, mostly because it tasted more like mixed berry than the desperate stab at the flavor I perceived previously.

KICK (INTENSITY)—5

Regrettably, this is still not a very intense beverage.  The effects are subtle, manifest mostly as (slightly) quickened mental faculties.  In some cases, this is all you really need, but for most applications for which I would consider taking down an energy drink, something like this is going to be far less than what I need.

KICK (DURATION)—5

Short of useful in most situations—2 hours or so will pass before the effects wear off.

THE DRINK OVERALL—5.67

You know, when it comes right down to it, this isn’t necessarily a bad energy drink—but it is limited in its scope of utility.  For example—if I need a little jolt to get me through my studying, then sure, I’d think about getting myself an Amp Energy—Focus.  But if I’m falling asleep at the wheel with my wife and kids in the car, or if I’m really dragging and we get slammed at work and I’m going to need something to help me keep up, then I’d definitely pass this over.
