Review for 6 Hour Power--Very Berry

CAFFEINE CONTENT

Probably in the ballpark of 100 mg, but not listed.

EASE IN ACQUISITION—6

Generally unpredictable as to where you’ll find it, but chances are there is somewhere nearby—whether it be convenience store or gas station or grocery store.

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—4

I’m pretty unimpressed with this one—all words and declarations of value and what not.  It’s very unimaginative and largely unsightly, with only a decent shade of red to offer some meager relief from the otherwise mediocre motif.

TASTE—3

Definitely on the low end for a 5 Hour Energy clone.  Now, as a disclaimer (for reasons that shall be seen) the last thing I did before opening this was to shake it like a boss.  First swig was a recognizable strawberry flavor, and I would have continued to enjoy it until I got to the end of the shot, at which point I got a whole mouthful of bitter ingredients.  Now, as I said, I shook this dang thing up pretty well before drinking it—but that didn’t do the trick, and the shot was all the worse for it.  So…if you plan on trying one of these against my advice, you might want to spend 10 minutes beforehand shaking it, because even appreciable vigor isn’t going to do the trick.

KICK (INTENSITY)—6

Perceptible, but rather weak—I did feel more alert, but that was the extent of it.

KICK (DURATION)—6

Two and a half hours.

THE SHOT OVERALL—5

This is a pretty pitiful effort at topping the most popular energy shot in the world.  It doesn’t taste as good (hard to manage), doesn’t kick nearly as well, and still costs about $2 per shot—whereas with an Eternal Energy shot, you get the same flavor with a better kick for 88 cents.  6 Hour Energy—Very Berry: you’ve failed miserably.  Get back to the drawing board and see if you can make something of yourself.

Review for Rip It--Red Zone

After enjoying Rip It—G-Force Sugar Free, I actually found myself looking forward to Red Zone—if they can nail one flavor, they can certainly nail another, right?  Unfortunately, not in this case—I am so unenthused about this drink that I’m almost having a hard time bringing myself to review it.  Read on.

CAFFEINE CONTENT

170 mg

EASE IN ACQUISITION—8

Fairly common, assuming you have an abundance of dollar stores where you live.

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—6.5

The heavy saturation of red does Red Zone a few favors; at the very least it doesn’t appear so dull as the rest.  On the downside, it’s still got that cheesy design that I have such issues with—seeing as they’re popular enough to come out with perhaps as many flavors as Monster, if not more, I would think they could afford a face-lift one of these days.

TASTE—5

So sugary as to be hard to drink—that plus the flavor (like cheap strawberry syrup) that doesn’t even try to be convincing makes this one a bust.

KICK (INTENSITY)—8

Quite perceptible, but feels more than anything else like a glorified sugar rush.  Not a buzz worth drinking the stuff by a long shot.

KICK (DURATION)—8

Three and a half hours, with a noticeable crash—which shouldn’t come as a surprise, given how inundated with HFCS this product is.

THE DRINK OVERALL—7

Best leave this overly saccharine stone unturned.

Review for Rip It G-Force Sugar Free

Well, finals are over—that’s the good news.  The bad news is the lack of sleep for the past couple of weeks have finally caught up with me; I am bedridden with a nasty fever.  In between sleeping, tossing/turning, drinking plenty of fluids (not the kind you’re thinking) and having fever dreams about building organic compounds (Shouldn’t happen to me, I’m done with o-chem!), I’ve decided to catch up on a couple of reviews of the drinks that have helped me stay alert the last little while.

CAFFEINE CONTENT

174 mg

EASE IN ACQUISITION—8

Dollar store acquisition.  Need I say more?

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—6

As lackluster as any of them—cheap print job and cheesy design make this fit into Dollar Tree perfectly.

TASTE—8

In times past, I’ve made no secret of my distain for Rip It energy drinks (and now shots).  In my last review of a Rip It drink, I noted that “the flavors all taste like they were brainstormed, selected, formulated, produced and shipped in the same five-minute time period, expending as little effort and creativity as humanly possible.”  That said, this drink is an exception.

This stuff tastes like…nostalgia.  It tastes like in the midst of formulating flavors like Power and Fruit Bomb, someone stopped and said, “You know, we should make an energy drink that tastes like the grape soda we loved so much when we were kids—but let’s knock off the calories and make it a little smoother, so it appeals to adults and not just 10-year-olds.”

So…just because I was one of those people who loved grape soda when I was younger, I appreciate what was done in Rip It—G-Force Sugar Free, enough that I just might drink it again on purpose at some point.

KICK (INTENSITY)—8

Not shabby—if you’re looking for a smooth, decent boost with minimal jitters for 99 cents, this might be up your alley.

KICK (DURATION)—8

Three and a half hours, sans crash—though I was quite ready for bed once this had worn off.

THE DRINK OVERALL—8

As far as energy drinks in general are concerned, this one’s alright—and definitely the best beverage of the Rip It line so far.  If you’re into grape soda and don’t want to spend a whole lot for your energy boost, I’d say this is right up your alley.

Review for The Tastiest Buzz

This review was brought to you through the contribution of Big Red Boots, editor-in-chief of possessedbycaffeine.com.  If you’re on my blog, chances are you’re familiar with his site; however, in the event you are not, you should definitely check it out.  His site is the one I went to before I started reviewing myself.

CAFFEINE CONTENT

Not certain, probably about 80 mg.  I have serious doubts that there’s any more in there than that.

EASE IN ACQUISITION—0

If I remember Big Red Boots’ review correctly, he found this at sort of an obscure store quite a while back—years, probably.  The company’s gone out of business (which is not a surprise, for reasons which we shall see), so if you’ve seen this once but haven’t since, you’re pretty well out of luck.

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—1

Okay—I can’t stand this packaging job.  It’s like the Battlefield Earth of energy drink cans—everything about this screams that the people who brainstormed and formulated it thought the world of it, but did not have a clue what they were doing.  First of all, the name—‘The Tastiest Buzz’?  You expect me to take that seriously?  Second—if you’re going to name it something so ridiculous, why not at least employ a backdrop befitting the name?  Why on earth would you go with a sunset (I’m guessing—what else could a maroon sky be?) cityscape?  I mean, I like sunsets and cityscapes as much as the next guy—but the cheap, wholly unrelated graphic kind of compounds the silliness (tilting your camera in every shot doesn’t make your film artistic, either).  Third—shrink-wrap!  I freaking hate shrink-wrap!  In the case of this drink, it is the nail on the coffin—your great idea wasn’t so great that you could get something actually printed on the can.  Worst thing is, it only goes south from here.

TASTE—1

I don’t have the foggiest what they were going for here.  The first taste is almost cranberry-ish—but then it metamorphosizes in your mouth, and subsequent sips are not the same.  My best guess is bitter (not even the medicinal kind—it’s ickier than that), watered-down cheap cherry flavoring—which is unfortunate, because this is supposedly ‘cranberry citrus.’  In any event, it is really bad—one of the most miscalculated, badly-executed flavors I’ve ever had.

KICK (INTENSITY)—5

Maybe it’s the fact that my can is years old, but this hardly delivered a noticeable boost.  That’s 0 for 2—not tasty, not buzzy.

KICK (DURATION)—5

Effective (kinda) for an hour and 45 minutes.

THE DRINK OVERALL—3.67

Well—that’s one less can of The Tastiest Buzz in the world, and I think I have done the latter a service.  This was a really bad drink, and I seriously doubt it will be missed.

WEBSITE: None.

Review for Rhino Rush

Recently, I’ve been seeing this shot pop up a lot here in Rexburg.  I’ve held off on buying it for a while, mostly because the cheapest I’ve been able to find it has been $5.25—more than I’ve ever spent on a single energy product.  With the price has come an intrigue, however—I would really like to know if this product has anything going for it that warrants the price, or if it’s just a product of another company’s bloated ego.  If it really is worth the cash I forked out for it, you can expect me to be really excited about it.  If not…then you can expect me to be really angry.  Either way, this will be an interesting review.

CAFFEINE CONTENT

200 mg

EASE IN ACQUISITION—4

If it’s getting to be common here, chances are it’s getting to be common elsewhere also.  Keep your eyes peeled (and your wallet full) if interested.

APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION—7

Got mixed feelings on this.  On one hand, it’s reasonably effective in drawing the eye—I like the dark colors, I like the background pattern, I like the logo and rhinoceros logo in the foreground; for some reason, all these seem to have a way of making me feel like the 2 oz. bottle was a little stouter than it actually was.  On the other hand, close inspection reveals probably the lamest, least applicable slogan I’ve ever seen on an energy product: “OMG Strength.”  Tell me something—does this look like the sort of product whose clientele are going to be wowed by valley girl-esque slogans like that?

TASTE—5

This is definitely different than most grape shots, that’s for sure.  Its flavor is more thick and convincing and less Triaminic-y, but it still has its drawbacks.  It has a medicinal aftertaste that’s very different than most shots, one that’s kind of earthy and herbal (I’m attributing that to the ephedra extract that’s in here); and furthermore, it’s pretty sour—enough to make me pucker, which usually doesn’t happen.  I’d call it more enjoyable than most grape shots, but still…you won’t be drinking this for the flavor (though at $5.25 they should be able to afford to make it decent).

KICK (INTENSITY)—8

And now—the moment of truth.  Does Rhino Rush, with its caffeine, ephedra, and yohimbe deliver the goods?  Short answer is yes—this is a really excellent boost, putting me right at the peak of functionality after a really short night’s sleep (which I needed right before my organic chemistry final).  I don’t know that I’d be willing to pay as much as I did to experience it again, but I have to say it is very respectable.

KICK (DURATION)—10

That peak of functionality lasted me a good five hours before it began to wear off, tapering gradually over the course of an hour before I felt like I could use a nap.

THE SHOT OVERALL—7.67

As far as functionality is concerned, Rhino Rush is indeed an excellent shot.  As far as value is concerned, however, I’m not sold on it.  Ephedra is supposed to be good for all sorts of things, but from what I understand, a lot of what is alleged it is supposed to come after extended use (increased metabolism and all that).  I’m not really willing to use Rhion Rush long term to get the alleged effects of ephedra extract, so in the end, this is just a good but overpriced shot.

The Top 10 (Sort Of...)

-->
For a while now, I’ve been meaning to publish a post about my personal favorite energy drinks.  When I first started this blog, I had been perfectly content to limit my regard to a list of these drinks at the right-hand side of the page, but for excelling in their capacity the way they do, I think they deserve a little more recognition than just that.  So here we are—the best of the best, and why I consider them to be such.

(Before I go into it, please note that this list is subject to change at any time.)

10) BAWLS GUARANA (10 OZ. BOTTLE)

You ever have instances where you just need a slight boost?  Nothing too intense, just something to give you that little nudge past the threshold dividing that obnoxious groggy, cobweb-brained state from real alertness?  I know I do, and when faced with a situation like that, I reach for a bottle of Bawls—it delivers just the right amount of energy for that sort of thing.  Sure, it’s kind of limited to this application if you’re looking at this as a functional beverage, but in terms of filling that niche, nothing does a better job.

Coming in at #9 is a more recent addition (as of the time of posting) to the Monster Energy lineup, Cuba Lima.  As far as kick it’s on the high end of average for the line; what really wins me over, though, is the flavor—I like how it’s so much more different than what the rest of the energy drinking world offers, but the coke and lime combination seems to go together so naturally and deliciously that you would think someone would have done it sooner (I can’t actually taste the lime in Coke’s drink, so that doesn’t count—plus it scarcely has any caffeine).  For that, I find myself with a hankering for a Cuba Lima as much as any other energy drink.

This one I like mostly for the kick.  Don’t get me wrong, I do like the flavor—it’s just that the combination of the three fruits never stops tasting strange to me.  In terms of its effects however, this one is completely unmatched in terms of its sheer enjoyability—I’ve scarcely had as much fun drinking energy drinks as when I took down one of these for a headache, then decided to clean my late grandmother’s entire two-story house (we were visiting at the time) while blasting Blind Guardian as loud as my computer would allow me.  Of course, it’s strong enough for just about any energy-requiring situation you could imagine, but if I have lots of physical labor to perform and I want to take every semblance of drudgery out of it, I will reach for an Xdurance every freaking time.

7) Two-way tie between VISO DYNAMO and VISO VIGOR

I’ll be the first to admit that energy drinking isn’t the healthiest habit in the world—it’s the one flaw on my otherwise excellent record of healthy eating.  When I drink one of these two, however, I feel like I could all but erase that lone blemish and still get everything I expect out of an energy drink.  In addition to tasting fantastic, they deliver a substantial amount of energy and are 100% all natural—and, let me tell you, they make for one heck of a breakfast drink alongside some brown rice, bacon and farm-fresh eggs.

Yes, I do find ties on lists such as these as obnoxious as the next man—but if you’ve been through the Rehab line, I think you’d understand.  They are all enormously refreshing and splendid for their recovery purposes (mind when I say “recovery” I think intense exercise or something of the sort—but I think Monster formulated these as hangover recovery drinks); the only thing that decides which one I go for is my mood—some days I prefer nothing above Rojo Tea, on others nothing but Orangeade will do the trick, and on others still I have insane cravings for Lemonade and have a hard time thinking about drinking anything else.  When my preferences are that sporadic, how the heck am I supposed to pin down just one to go on my list?

To make note of my failure to include Rehab—Green Tea and Rehab—Protean with the other three—I just don’t like them nearly as much.  I’m not wild about the dry texture of Green Tea (if it weren’t for that it would be there for sure), and Protean is just so dang strange that I can never really decide whether I like it or not.  These two will perform just as well, but by my estimation the other three provide for a vastly more pleasant drinking experience.

Don’t have a lot to say here except that these are wonderfully well-rounded energy drinks—they taste great and kick great and do all that without calories.  Enough said here, I think.

4) Two-way tie between LIGHTER SPIDER ENERGY and SPIDER ENERGY

I freaking love Spider Energy drinks.  They have almost everything going for them—they taste just like energy drinks should, they kick just like energy drinks should, they look just like energy drinks should, and do all this at only 99 cents a can.  Now, I have to make note that if I had to pick between one or the other, I’d have to go with Lighter Spider, just because I like the flavor a bit more—but the difference isn’t great enough that I’d even consider not putting Spider on the list.

Kronik Energy—Blue Citrus ranks so highly on the list just because I haven’t been able to find anything else quite like it.  I’m quite fond of it’s unique grapefruit taste, but what really takes the cake is the kick—this is the first energy drink I’ve had that really seems to embody the term “functional beverage.”  It didn’t get me especially wired, but it seemed to facilitate every single little thing I did—almost as though I was at just the right level of energy for everything I needed to do.  It’s the sort of thing I’d love to experience on a regular basis, but alas—it is no longer sold nearby.

No one was more disappointed than me when Monster Energy—Heavy Metal was discontinued—though given how many people absolutely hated it, I probably shouldn’t be all that surprised.  As for myself, however, I thought it was a fantastic energy drink—I loved the margarita-inspired flavor (or at least what I’ve been told was margarita-inspired), and I loved how it kicked so hard for so long…it was the sort of boost that automatically pops into your head when someone around you says “energy drink.”  Even today it pops up at Big Lots from time to time, but gets bought up pretty quick—so grab it while you can; it’s worth experiencing at least once.

Coming in at the #1 spot(s) are two energy drinks that have absolutely nothing in common, except for the fact that I really cannot for the life of me decide which I like more—they are both the best at what they do, but do very different things.  Make sense?  No?  Alright, let me see if I can elaborate: on one hand, you have Rockstar Zero Carb—an almost ubiquitous, zero calorie energy beverage that comes with an unbelievably delicious wild berry flavor and in two sizes, which I have dubbed “Extra Strength” and “Freaking INSANE!”.  If you want energy, you cannot go wrong by going with Rockstar Zero Carb.  On the other, you have Venom Energy—Death Adder.  This doesn’t have a lot going for it health wise, but it is unbelievably delicious and has the best function-oriented kick I’ve ever had, bar none.  You want to be at the top of your game?  You cannot go wrong by going with Venom Energy—Death Adder.

See?  Two different drinks, equally great at what they do.  I’ve tried to bump one down—I just can’t.  In any case, these two are in my mind the best energy drinks around—which I go for just depends on whether I want to be wired to an extreme degree or if I need serious functional energy.
